Profile

Cathryn McGahey has been instructed since May 2000 as junior counsel to the Bloody Sunday Inquiry. In addition, she undertakes a wide range of public law work, including judicial reviews, inquests and disciplinary tribunals. Her private law practice includes race and disability discrimination claims and claims under the Human Rights Act 1998. She is a member of the Attorney-General's Panel of Counsel [B Panel]. She is also a Special Advocate, appearing regularly in the Administrative Court in control order cases and before the Special Immigration Appeals Commission.

Before joining the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, Cathryn worked extensively in criminal and civil fraud, and was instructed frequently by the Serious Fraud Office and CPS HQ.

  • R (Wilton) v Assistant Deputy Coroner for Northamptonshire [2007]: judicial review of coroner's refusal to leave unlawful killing to the jury in an inquest into the death of a child in custody
  • Secretary of State for the Home Department v AW [2009]: control order quashed because information before the SSHD was materially misleading
  • R (Farah) v Coroner for Southampton [2009]: judicial review of coroner's decision to give a judgment and to express various opinions within it
