Shaman maintains a mixed practice combining intellectual capacity with sound advocacy skills.  His previous employment experiences involving tax consultancy (London) and litigation (Toronto, Canada) amongst others, keep him well grounded with exceptional inter-personal skills.  He remains an active participant in Chambers ongoing seminar series, and regularly speaks both at Chambers' and in-house seminars nationally.

Shaman prides himself on being able to work as part of a team as much as leading, whilst mindful of client sensitivities.  His qualifications include LLB (Manchester), CEP (Lille, France) and LLM (London).  He has a working fluency in French and Punjabi.

Notable Cases

  • January 2012 - Advising a firm of Solicitors in proposed proceedings by or against the Legal Services Commission - A case in which the LSC are trying to impose a charge on assets which were the subject of separate proceedings and advising on the prospects of defending such a claim.
  • 18th July 2011 - Murphy v (i) Rayner, (ii) Aeternus Limited and (iii) Courtina Corp [2011] SCCO - A case in which the Defendants won at trial and sought to enforce a costs order in their favour directly against the Legal Services Commission.  In hotly contested proceedings in the SCCO, Shaman engaged in highly technical argument about the ability of the LSC to retrospectively revoke a certificate in circumstances where it had been put on notice to be concerned about the stated means of the assisted party.
  • 25th October 2010 - Guerrero v Nykoo, Swansea County Court, HHJ Vosper QC - a winning argument on the interpretation of words 'incorporation' and 'same document' as referred to by the Consumer's Home or Place of Work Regulations 2008, rendering a credit hire agreement unenforceable in the light of a non-compliant cancellation notice.
  • 10th September 2010 - Wei v Cambridge Power & Light Limited, Cambridge County Court, HHJ Maloney QC - a significant credit-hire RTA case involving the applicability of the Cancellation of Contracts made in a Consumer's Home or Place of Work etc. Regulations 2008 such as to render the hire agreement unenforceable on public policy grounds, akin toDimond v Lovell.
  • June 2010 - Westcott & Arkell v London Borough of Barnet - defending two consolidated claims for unfair dismissal, age discrimination and victimisation made by senior personnel in Planning concerning a period of employment that experienced 3 significant restructures and a programme of redundancy.
  • September 2009 - Mohammed v Enfield Borough Council - defending a claim for race discrimination by a newly qualified teacher.
  • 10th February 2009 - Parker v Otukoya [2009] SCCO - A case that concerned the enforcement of regulation 4(2)(c) of the CFA Regulations 2000, where the solicitor continued to make appropriate enquiries after the date of the CFA. Sarwar, CulshawandMyatt were all before the court.  Ultimately, the question for determination was whether the further enquiries were just 'belt and braces' or whether they were indicative of and consistent with incomplete enquiries prior to entering into the CFA.
  • February 2009 - Sweryda v London Borough of Barnet - defending a claim for age discrimination from a teacher still in employment.
  • October 2008 - Grewal vLondonBorough of Barnet, ET- Costs principles in Employment Tribunals
  • August 2008 - EAT - resisting an appeal by the ex-employer of a care worker in a residential home for young people, and considering the higher evidential threshold in cases involving the Sex Offender Registry.
  • May 2008 - Dass v London Borough of Barnet - defending a claim for victimisation and sex discrimination from a social worker employee
  • 20th December 2007-Grewal v London Borough of Barnet [UKEAT/0573/07/CEA], EAT -Limitation point in a claim for unfair dismissal where the Claimant intimated a future intention to bring a claim
  • 12 June 2007-Kashmiri v Ejaz & Anor [2007] EWHC 90074 (Costs)-exploringMyattand the sophistication of a businessman who did not speak English as a first language.

Notable Work

  • December 2008 - advisory work to London Borough of Barnet in relation to the contractual arrangements for nursery nurses.
