Baron Mereworth v Ministry of Justice (Crown Office)
24 May 2011
Louise Jones acted for the Ministry of Justice in this matter, where a hereditary peer, Lord Mereworth, was seeking to assert that he was entitled to a Writ of Summons enabling him to become a member of the House of Lords. The court declined jurisdiction, on the basis that this was a matter within the exclusive cognizance of the House of Lords, but in the alternative struck the matter out, as it was plain that section 1 of the House of Lords Act 1999 repealed the rights of a hereditary peer to membership of the House of Lords.
